Technology should work for you, not against you. It's meant to save you time and money. So for social butterflies, like myself, who have a number of IM accounts with say, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk and then a few different email accounts and then even more social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace), a solution is required that consolidates all of them in one place. Cue my wonderful friend Digsby.

With Digsby, I've set up my 3 email accounts, 4 social networking accounts and 3 chat accounts. It's configured to start up with my pc or laptop and immediately I can see if I have new emails, can check Facebook for any updates and know who's available to chat without the slog of having to log into all the the IM accounts individually.

So what else can this sweet little tool do? Well you don't just get to see what's happening. You can also update your status, delete those new emails, mark them as read or report them as spam. You can set your preferences to suit your needs...timestamps, buddy icons, notifications, the works.

Best thing since sliced bread? No...Better.

 

Let's Talk Social Networking 

At a glance, without having to log onto MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn separately, you're able to stay up to date with what's happening. There's a real time news feed so you'll always know what's going on.

You'll receive alerts of friend requests, messages, pokes, group invites, etc.

You can update your Twitter status or retweet from Digsby. No need to log on to Twitter or download any of the other Twitter programs that are about.

Oh, and using Digsby's a lot more discreet than having these social network windows open on your internet browser

So How Does It Handle Emails? 

Here's What Digsby Can Do

You can manage your Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, AOL/AIM mail, POP and IMAP accounts straight from Digsby. So all these are kept in one place. You can configure Digsby to get popup notifications when you get a new email. When you click the popup, you'll be taken directly to the message because you're automatically logged into your webmail accounts.

You're able to send emails to your friends in your Buddy List. The email sends directly from any account that you've got with Digsby.

You can see how many unread emails you have from the Digsby frontpage and then you can perform actions such as "Mark as Read" or "Delete" or "Report Spam".

A One-Stop Shop For Instant Messaging  

Digsby lets you see all you friends from your different chat accounts in one buddy list. No need to open and juggle between different chat windows. Tabbed conversation windows means that you can have multiple conversations with friends on different chat accounts.

You have the option of giving your contacts aliases so that you don't have to figure out which "John" you're talking to if you know more than one or if they have an obscure buddy name like 'whoopwhoop987'.

You can send emails to your buddies straight from your buddy list window. If you've set up your preferences to receive popup notifications, when a new IM message comes through, you can reply straight from the popup. No need to restore the chat window!

There are different application skins for you to use so you can give it a personalize the look. Even change the way your conversations look with themes, from simple windows to 3D conversation bubbles.

You can decide if you want to see your buddy icons or not. And if you do want to see them, you can choose the size of the icon.

You get to select which events you want to be alerted about using the customizable notification system.

Organize your buddy list however you want! You can do this by status, by account, log size or manually. There's even the option to use a secondary sorting method.

Best of all, if one of your friends has more that one IM account you can combine them into a single merged contact - no duplicate buddies!
