The Problem With Entertainment
I'm a music-lover, and my taste in music is broad and varied. Something bothers me these days though, something that is making it harder and harder to find music I really want to listen to. Maybe you have the same problem. I can summarize this at a high-level with one word: Entertainment. Music seems to be all about it. Why is that a bad thing? Well, before I explain my perspective, I have to first give you my understand of the word "entertainment".
In my mind, in the current day, entertainment is actually about numbing the mind and spell-binding. People sit in front of the tv for hours for the purpose of entertainment. What's really happening though is that it is diminishing one's capacity to think. I'm talking in broad terms here, not about specific shows or even specific types of shows. An example though if I was to take a particular genre of tv show would be the "soap opera". I cannot think of any other genre of tv show (at the moment) that offers less value to the human mind. Yet people will "waste" several hours of each week hypnotized by the dramas of these fictional characters. I call it a waste, but this of course is just the way I perceive it. With tv in general, there seems to be a lot of noise and clutter taking up the broadcast space, and, relative to the amount of noise, there really is very little worth listening to and watching on the box.
The Noise of Music
Going back to music, the purpose seems to be to entertain, or: numb the mind and spell-bind. On top of this, most of us seem to want the exact that same thing, to have our minds numbed by the music and be spellbound - hypnotized by words and rhythms, dancing and singing along to music, yet we have no idea what the music is even saying. Worse yet, we may well know exactly what the music is saying, and though it doesn't agree with our fundamental ideas or morals, we still remain engaged by it because "the vocal [or flow] is cool" or "the rhythm is catchy".
The way I see it, the same problem that exists with tv exists within the music industry. Relative to the amount of music there is available, there is very little that is actually worth listening to.
Arriving at our DestinationThis is the point of this series of posts. We're going to share with you music and artists that you may not be listening to right now; artists who are not simply entertainers. Your mind won't be numbed because they are often thought provoking, and though you'll be captivated, you won't be spellbound. Music can be an extremely powerful medium for conveying and sharing ideas and experiences, educating, and inspiring people. It's not something that should be treated trivially, used frivolously, or selfishly to manipulate people. The sentiments and motivations that go into music get absorbed by it's audience, and this can make that music either a great tool for enlightenment and elevation, or a dangerous and covert weapon of mass manipulation. Listen carefully to what you hear. I bet that not all is as it seems. So, we're going to present to you music that generally uplifts, and doesn't provoke or promote negativity.
